Project Details

Project 1: Lighting

Brief: Design and Make a light for a user of your choice.

Length: 30 pages

Making?: Yes, a fully functional lamp

Deadline: Monday 14th December 9:00 am

The light can be portable (i.e. battery powered) or use a fixed power source (i.e. plug in). It can have a specific purpose (i.e. a reading light, a night light for children) or be for general use. It can use LEDs or low voltage light bulbs.

Project 2: Camera

Brief: Design a camera for a user of your choice.

Length: 16 pages

Making?: No, just a 3D CAD model (e.g. sketchup)

Deadline: Monday 8th February 2016 9:00 am

This project involves no making, so is all about creative design. Your task is to reimagine the camera for 2020s. What should a camera be? What functions should it have? Should it be simple or complex? In the age of the smartphone, why would people need a camera?

AS Level Product Design is structured into two units:

Unit 1 – Materials, Components and Application

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

2 hour written paper

80 marks

Based primarily on Materials and Components and consisting of three sections:

Section 1 contains compulsory limited response questions

Section 2 offers a choice of one question from two

Section 3 contains one compulsory question

Unit 2 – Learning Through Designing and Making

50% of AS, 25% of A Level

Coursework – approx 50 hours

80 marks

Written (or electronic) design portfolio

Manufactured outcome(s)

Coursework may take a number of forms:

a simple design-and-make project

two smaller projects

a portfolio of work
